Veridian and the U.S. Air Force Join Forces to Conduct Bio-acoustic
Research and Development
Dayton, OH (July 2, 2001) - Veridian is pleased to announce the
company has signed a Cooperative Research and Development Agreement
(CRADA) with the Air Force Research Laboratory to conduct mission-related
hearing protection research and development. This agreement enables
Veridian to test and evaluate new and improved hearing-protective
devices for a broad range of customers, including commerical firms,
military organizations, academic institutions and, with prior approval,
other governments.
The CRADA is between Veridian and the Air Force Research Laboratory
(AFRL) Human Effectiveness Directorate. The research will be performed
at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. The AFRL will allow Veridian
access to bio-acoustics facilities for this work. These include
the Real Ear Attenuation Testing, Microphone in Real Ear, Auditory
Localization Facility, and Voice Research and Evaluation System.
Bio-acoustics R&D focuses on protecting human hearing from high-intensity
noise and on ensuring the quality of the information presented to
the listener.
The AFRL's bio-acoustics facilities are certified to perform the
tests specified by the Department of Defense (DoD) Hearing Conservation
Working Group. Vendors selling hearing protection to DoD agencies
must have their products tested against the most recent American
National Standards Institute (ANSI) standards (ansi.org). Veridian's
Human Systems Group will conduct these tests.
Veridian scientists and engineers will work along side the world-class
AFRL Human Effectiveness Directorate staff. Through this CRADA,
the Directorate will acquire information about bio-acoustics developments
essential to the DoD mission. Further, Veridian will maintain and
enhance the capabilities of important AFRL R&D resources and
facilities.
Al Kart, Veridian Program Manager explains, "Working hand-in-hand
with our DoD, indsutry, non-DoD organizations and academic partners,
we look forward to this promising work. Through effective use of
AFRL's unique facilities, Veridian and the firms we serve will benefit
greatly. This CRADA will bring long-needed attention to the important
area of hearing protection and conservation and will allow access
to unique Air Force facilities that have not been available to the
private sector."
