Hinkley Talaria® 40 Jet Boat Debuts at Fall Boat Shows

Southwest Harbor, Maine, Septebmer 13, 2001. The much-anticipated Hinckley Talaria 40 Jet will make its official debut at the Fall 2001 boat shows in Newport, Annapolis and Fort Lauderdale. Drawings and a scale model were first shown at the Newport Boat Show last year and since then twenty of the new T40™ yachts have been sold.

Sized between the popular 36-foot Hinckley Picnic Boat® and Talaria 44 Jet, the Talaria 40 Jet was designed by Bruce King of Newcastle, Maine with the same classic lines and painstaking attention to detail as his previous designs. The T40 also incorporates the technological advances for which Hinckley yachts have become known: waterjet propulsion, the patented JetStick® control and high-tech DualGuard® composite construction.

In a review of the Talaria 40 Jet in Maine Boats & Harbors, Art Paine wrote that the yacht represents "great yacht design in the classic sense" and "as a functional design and sytlistic statement, there is not one element that isn't perfect". Earlier this year, Forbes FYI named Hinckley yachts "America's Best Yachts".

The T40 features a spacious protected cockpit with confortable settees flanking each side. The sheltered area offers 360-degree visibility for the helmsman and navigator, as well as clear sight lines for guests to take in the scenery. The cockpit opens to a sunny seating area with curved settees facing aft on either side of the passageway and a roomy deck area. An offset transom door for boarding from the swim platform and steps to port and starboard make it easy to get on and off the yacht.

Belowdecks is a well-thought-out interior built with impeccable craftsmanship. Satin-varnished cherry is used throughout, and is accented by Hinckley's signature teak and tulipwood sole. The straighforward layout includes a galley to starboard, full head with separate shower to port and v-berth forward. A cedar-lined hanging locker, cushioned bench seat, rounded bulkheads, ample headroom and three large overhead hatches provide additional convenience and comfort.

Engineered to be a lively, spirited performer, the T40 comes equipped with Hinckley's patented JetStick computerized steering and control system. The joystick-like device, which was pioneered and perfected on the Picnic Boat, allows helmsmen to maneuver the boat with a high degree of accuracy and ease. With JetStick, the yacht can turn on its axis, stop within one boat's length and slide laterally into a tight space at the dock.

The T40 is powered by twin 420 Yanmar diesels and Hamilton waterjets. Weighing in at 26,000 pounds, she will cruise at 28 knots and post a top speed of 33 knots. The yacht's fine entry forward and 22 degrees of deadrise amidships combine to help deliver a smooth, dry, fast ride. With a fuel capacity of 340 gallons, the yacht has a range of 300 nautical miles.

The new yacht has a draft of only 26 inches due to the lack of a propeller or other underbody appendages. This allows the craft to cruise in shallow waters, explore pristine coves and waterways and land on secluded beaches. Without propellers that can harm swimmers or wildlife, the boat also provides an added measure of safety.

Like all Hinckley yachts, the T40 hull is built with the company's DualGuard composite construction. The technique bonds outer layers of high-strength Kevlar® to an inner skin of carbon fiber using the SCRIMP® process. Unlike traditional methods, SCRIMP involves laying up the hull dry, then vacuum bagging the entire structure and injecting it with resin to infuse every square inch. The result is a fully integrated framework that is stiffer and more resistant to impact, yet weighs 14% less than previous hulls. In addition to providing a stronger, lighter hull, the environmentally-friendly SCRIMP process also eliminates 98% of teh toxic air emissions.

The Hinckley Company, which is headquartered in Southwest Harbor, Maine and has boatyards in Portsmouth, Rhode Island and Stuart, Florida, was founded in 1928 and is one of the oldest yacht builders in the U.S. Hinckley is also recognized as one of the world's premier builders of semi-custom sailboats and jet boats, ranging in length from 29 to 70 feet. In addition to its boat-building operations, the company provides maintenance, repair and storage services and operates a yacht brokerage and charter service and retail store.
